The Karnataka (KPSC) Judicial Service Examination is organized every year by the Karnataka High Court for recruitment to the posts in the Civil Judge cadre of the KJS.
Karnataka KPSC Judicial Service Exam Civil Judge Syllabus & Overview
The notification is released on the Karnataka High Court’s official portal or the portal of the KPSC (Karnataka Public Service Commission) These Civil Judge recruitment in the Karnataka Judicial Service were previously referred to as Civil Judge Junior Division.
Eligibility and Age Limit – Karnataka KPSC Judicial Services Civil Judge
- Applicant must have passed of a degree in Law granted by a University established by Law in India & must have been enrolled as an Advocate i.e. passed LLB (Bachelor of Laws) from a BCI (Bar Council of India) recognized University or college & enrolled as an advocate as per the Advocates Act & BCI(Bar Council of India) rules.)
- General & non-reserved category Applicants. They have not completed 35 years of age as on the last date fixed for receipt of applications – as per the official notification of the year.
- Applicants belonging to SC(Scheduled Caste) or ST(Scheduled Tribe). They have not completed 38 years of age as on the last date fixed for receipt of applications -as per the official notification of the year.
- 3 years’ relaxation for upper age limit for Ex-servicemen applicants
- For more details, applicants must have checked the official advertisement such as age limits & other details for ‘In Service’ applicants.
Overall Scheme of the Karnataka KPSC Judicial Service Civil Judge Exam
Competitive Exam for the recruitment of Civil Judges will consist of 3 stages :
- Preliminary Examination: Objective type/ MCQ(multiple choice questions)
- Main Written Examination: Narrative / Descriptive / Essay type
- Viva-Voce: Personal Interview
Applicants whose secured marks in the Preliminary Exam are eligible for the Main exam. An applicant which are shortlisted for the main exam on the basis of their ranking in Preliminary exam. The final ranking will not the basis on preliminary.
(a) Karnataka Judicial Service Examination – Preliminary Syllabus

- Indian Penal code, 1860
Part-C
- General knowledge: Test of mental ability & reasoning.
(b) Karnataka KPSC Judicial Service Civil Judge Exam – Main Papers Syllabus
(i) Translation Paper (Max Marks 100)
One translation paper & applicants will be required to translate passages in English into Kannada & Kannada into English. The Passages will be from -1 Depositions, 2-Judgments & 3- Documents.
(ii) Law Paper 1 (Max Marks 100)
- The Indian Evidence Act, 1872
- The Code of Civil Procedure, 1908
- Principles of Pleading and the Constitution of India.
- The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973
(iii) Law Paper 2 (Max Marks 100)
- Framing of Issues & writing of Judgments in Civil Cases.
(iv) Law Paper 3 (Max Marks 100)
- Writing & Framing of Charges of Judgments in Criminal cases.
(c) Karnataka KPSC Judicial Service Exam: Viva-voce (Max Marks 100)
- The Applicants grasp of principles of law, General Knowledge & suitability for appointment as Civil Judge shall be tested.
(d) Karnataka KPSC Judicial Service Examination: Computer Test (Max Marks 25)
This test of knowledge of computers which carry max 25 marks & such marks secured by the applicants will be considered for determining the suitability & computer knowledge of the Applicants & will not be combined to the total marks obtained in the main exam of both written exam & Viva-Voce.
(e) Mini Marks to qualify for the Karnataka KPSC Judicial Services:
- Mini marks for qualify in the Preliminary Exam will be 50 for applicants belonging to SC (Scheduled Castes) & ST (Scheduled Tribes) & 60 for others.
- Mini marks for qualify in each paper of the Main Written Exam will be 40 for applicants belonging to SC (Scheduled Castes) & ST (Scheduled Tribes) & 50 for others.
- Mini marks for qualify in the Viva-Voce will be 40 for candidates belonging to SC (Scheduled Castes) & ST (Scheduled Tribes) & 50 for others.
Its Provided that no applicants who have secured less than the mention of the mini marks below:
- Any paper of the Main Written Exam will be eligible for Viva-Voce.
- Any paper of the Main Written Exam/viva-voce will be eligible for selection as Civil Judge.
- In order to be considered under the applicant of General Category. A Applicants which are reversed Such as SC (Scheduled Caste)/ ST (Scheduled Tribe) has to secure the mini marks prescribed for General Category applicant in the Prelim Exam, Main Written Exam & Viva-Voce.
